The largest land animals currently living are elephants. There are currently three recognized living species: the Asian elephant, the African forest elephant, and the African bush elephant. They are the only remaining representatives of the family Proboscidea and family Elephantidae. During the Pleistocene, the family was once considerably more diverse, but during the Late Pleistocene epoch, the majority of species went extinct.
